MESSAGE TO THE FAMILY PHYSICIAN

Why choose Canadian Cardiology Services– Diagnostic Division

Canadian Cardiology Services is a five year established Holter Scanning company offering new and innovative services to our community. Too often the value of ambulatory or holter monitoring is not realized. This under-appreciation for the test stems from many sources.

1/ Personnel generating the report for the specialist have not, in many cases completed any formal education in the study of electrocardiology.

2/ Without formal education, most scanners are limited to ectopic recognition, ST deviations, and basic arrhythmias. Many have little understanding of the art of correlating the findings presented to them, such as patient signs and symptoms, thus often rendering a subtle finding a specialist would warrant valuable and not include this unrecognized finding.

3/ When valuable information is not recognized and forwarded to the specialist, it creates the appearance that the procedures efficacy was diminished, when in actuality it was not utilized to its full capacity.

4/ Anytime a piece of evidence is overlooked by the scanner, the patient is placed at risk for medical intervention, not to mention the additional testing and associated costs, as well as the anxiety and fear the patient will experience.

5/ At Canadian Cardiology Services we want to work with the family physician. We encourage that you share patient history, or your concerns about your patient so we can tailor our focus on lead placement, drug efficacy, chronotropic competence, or any other skill necessary to either uncover cardiac complications, or just as important, rule them out.

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU:

Canadian Cardiology Services will only employ technologists certified by the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists. This association has received CMA sponsored accreditation. As the senior technologist, and president and owner, I have taught Electrocardiology and Holter scanning fulltime in a private medical college for over a decade. I am the current Director of Continuing Education and board member of the Ontario Society of Cardiology Technologists.

I will treat every holter as thou it was my first. I will attempt to individualize every patient according to the information we receive from the physician and adjust my focus accordingly. I will consider you as one of our family, and continually update you on any relevant information pertaining to the benefits of Holter scanning.

WHEN TO ORDER A HOLTER MONITOR

I understand that the cost of healthcare is rising and that physicians must be prudent when ordering tests. Provided is a general guideline as to when a Holter Monitor is a prudent and justified prescribed test:

1/ Patient complains of syncope

2/ Palpitations

3/ Shortness of breathe

4/ Dizzy or light headed

5/ Chest pain with exertion, thermal changes, emotional disturbance, after a meal ( post prandial )

6/ Suspect CAD, or at risk of CAD

7/ Patients you suspect of having an accessory pathway.

8/ Post myocardial infarction. Complex VE’s especially runs, early post MI carries an increased mortality.

9/ Newly acquired Bundle Branch Block, especially if patient complains of intermittent chest pain. We will establish a baseline ST due to the fact that BBB’s alter ST in specific leads. A reanalysis after baseline establishment can then assess ischemic changes.

10/ To assess drug efficacy

11/ To assess pacemaker function
